Underwater Acoustic Transmission (TASM)
Description
Type of entity Platform
Main activity The purpose of this platform is to study and assess underwater acoustic communication systems.

The goal of underwater acoustic communication is to acoustically convey information underwater - to be used by ships, submarines and underwater drones so they can communicate over long distances under the sea.

Several modems have now been marketed. However, their robustness, speed, range or energy consumption can still be improved, to offer reliable communication systems allowing for the future roll-out of underwater communication networks.

With this objective in mind, the CACS/COM team working within the Lab-STICC laboratory decided to develop a testing platform to experiment with the results stemming from underwater acoustic communication research.

Examples of work TRIDENT acoustic communication platform from the DGA (French Defence Procurement Agency), working with SERCEL. ROSE project (Réseau Orienté Surveillance d'Epaves, Acoustic Network for Wreck Monitoring) led by Ifremer. Haliodstar project (Alistar AUV) led by ECA. ?CIFRE' thesis (an industrial agreement for training through research) with Thales Underwater Systems, and several other theses from the Brittany region in the context of FUI, COMET and Canopus projects. Research collaborations with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Missouri University of Science and Technology, National University of Singapore, University of York etc. As part of Pôle Mer Bretagne projects financed by the FUI interministerial fund and Brittany Region, IMT Atlantique was commissioned to supply an underwater acoustic communication link for the COMET project (with RTsys) and the CANOPUS project (with IxBlue). A new NemoSens project is planned for 2018 (with RTsys) on acoustic communication networks for a swarm of underwater drones.
